Water rates for city utility payers are going to increase. That is a given. The city has begun the Proposition 218 process, required to make any modifications in the water rate.

Editorial: City must address financial crisis
The City of Corcoran is facing a budget crisis. A recent fiscal report notes that within another year, the city’s general fund will flat line. Gone will be the $5.6 million reserve that was in place in 2008; that figure is already reduced to about $1.5 million in reserve this year (the fiscal year ends June 30). By the end of the 2016-17 budget year, the reserve is projected at about $850,000.

Measure K fails
Kings County voters failed to pass Measure K during last week’s California primary election, leaving county and local public safety officials looking for alternative means to fund their departments. The initiative came within about 40 voters countywide of passing.
City starts budget talks
The city council got a first look at its 2016-17 budget proposal and it wasn’t pretty. During its regular meeting last week, staff presented a preliminary budget showing the general fund with $415,000 in red ink.

Corcoran Unified School District has named its Star Students for the fourth and final quarter of the 2015-16 school year. Students are recognized for a variety of reasons, including academic improvement, behavioral changes and outstanding citizenship. One student from each local school site is selected each quarter.
