CUSD recognizes employees of the year
Corcoran Unified School District recently named its top employees for the 2016-2017 school year. The district selects an administrator, a teacher, a classified employee and also selects a volunteer of the year. The winners were selected from a list of nominees. Corcoran’s selections will be submitted to the Kings County Office of Education as consideration for employees of the year for the county. Gary Ortiz Salas
Graveside service was held Feb. 3 (Friday) at 11 a.m. at Calvary Cemetery for Gary Ortiz Salas, 58, who died Jan. 16 in Fresno.
Ernest Souza
Graveside services was held Feb. 2 (Thursday) at 1 p.m. at Calvary Cemetery in Hanford for Ernest Souza Sr., 94, who died Jan. 25 in Clovis.
City to move forward with sales tax increase
The city council once again peered into the future during last week’s regular meeting, receiving a glimpse of a desperate budget scenario. Absent some form of action, the city’s general fund will continue to decline over the next five years, resulting in $1 million in red ink by fiscal year 2021-2022.
Cockfighting ring busted
A local man has been arrested on a host of charges after the Kings County Sheriff’s Department broke up a cockfighting operation on his property.

Police arrested a 21-year-old man Saturday after an alleged confrontation turned deadly.
Corcoran honors top citizens
The community gathered to celebrate its top citizens of 2016 last week during the annual Corcoran Chamber of Commerce banquet. Earning the honors were Karli Toone, Diane Gomez and Steve Brown. Before those three were introduced, however, the Corcoran Lions Club was showcased as Corcoran’s organization of the year.
Mario Martinez
A Memorial Service was held for Mario Martinez Saturday, January 28 at 1 p.m. at the Almaden Hills Methodist Church, 1200 Blossom Hill Rd., San Jose. Mr. Martinez died Jan. 10.
William Crookshanks
William Crookshanks, 75, of Henderson, NV passed away on January 11, 2017 in Orange County, CA.
