Daniel Maurice Gabbard of Armona passed away Thursday, March 2, 2017 at the age of 77 years.  Dan was born in Modesto and resided in Corcoran for over 60 years.

Gonzales-Gomez named Woman of the Year by Assemblyman Salas

Assemblymember Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield) and the California State Assembly honored Mary Gonzales-Gomez as the 2017 Woman of the Year for the 32nd Assembly District.  Assemblymember Salas recognized GonzalesGomez during the annual Assembly floor ceremony for her long-standing community service throughout Kings County. The ceremony was held Monday.

Closed campus being discussed for CHS

Tardy Corcoran High School students could eventually lead to a closed campus at lunch for all CHS students during the lunch recess. The school’s principal, Antonia Stone, presented a proposal to the school board last week, flagging the freshman class for specific consideration at this time.

Sales tax to be on ballot

A public hearing last week paved the way for a June election to approve an increase to the local sales tax. The city council held the hearing as part of its regular meeting. The hearing was short and sweet, with no comments from the audience and no written testimony. City Manager Dr. Kindon Meik did provide a report outlining why the city considers it important to seek the additional sales tax revenue.

Castle Sold

Note: For just the third time in 100 years, the Bliss House has been sold. Alvin Odle purchased the Bliss estate in 1967, then sold the house and 20 acres to his son, Bill Odle, 10 years later. Bill and Donna Odle recently moved to Oregon and sold the home before leaving. Here’s what has happened to the property in the intervening years.

Transit grant funds

The city is poised to spend almost $450,000 in grant money on transit department projects. The city council approved a resolution last week allowing the transit department to move ahead with the proposal.
