It was estimated that about 500 youth received free back-to-school haircuts Sunday at the Recreation Association of Corcoran (RAC). The event was the idea of Emmet Duran of Legends Barbershop in Corcoran.

The event was open to boys and girls from preschool to 12th grade. The event was held from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. and for most of the day a line of eager youth strecthed from the Kate Boswell Senior Center door to the RAC parking lot.


Those who attended the event were entered into free scooter and bike raffles. They also received free school supplies. Keller Motors also donated gift bags and raffle items for the event. Corcoran Community Church and Jerry’s Self Storage handed out free shaved ice treats.


A dozen barbers and hair stylists donated their time at the event. A free barbecue was also held with Carlos Alaniz behind the grill.


Other sponsors included Catch a Fade Barbershop, Legends Barbershop, Calicuts, Down Kings Car Club, Amoré Café, Tractors and Automotive, Farmers Lumber Co., RS Liquor, Jerry’s Storage, Intrepid Minds, Si Se Puede Car Club, DJ Sparkki Markki, RAC, Nacho’s Automotive and Decal Fantasy.

Cookie, fudge contest winners

The Corcoran Journal and Corcoran Chamber cookie and fudge contest winners were chosen last week. The cookie contest was decided by just one point and taking home first place was Tiffany Singleton who submitted snickerdoodles. In second place in the cookie contest was Patti Rodriguez who won with her Raspberry Ribbon Cookies.
