he Corcoran 50-50 Club held their annual fundraiser Friday night at the home of Patty and Jerry Robertson. There were plenty of winners at Friday’s drawing but perhaps the most important includes the recipient of this year’s fundraiser—the 2019 100th Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration Committee an ad-hoc committee of the Corcoran Chamber of Commerce.
Due to the planned celebration which will be enjoyed by the entire community, the Corcoran 50-50 Club decided to donate the funds raised from Friday’s drawing to the annual tree lighting event. This year’s tree lighting will be held Thursday, Dec. 5 in conjunction with the Corcoran Christmas Parade.
Plans are being made for this year’s 100th tree lighting celebration by the lighting committee which is being spearheaded by Lisa Shaw from the Corcoran Chamber. Shaw hosts monthly meetings for anyone wishing to participate. This month’s meeting is set for next Wednesday, May 8 at 5:30 p.m. at the chamber office at 1040 Whitley Avenue.
Ideas for the 100th tree celebration include baking contests, neighborhood decorating contests, Saturday breakfasts with Santa Claus, church performances, a community store, live nativity scenes, a Christmas tree auction, Christmas Cookie Challenges, live reindeer in the park, and ice skating at Christmas Tree Park.
This year’s tree will continue a century old tradition of placing a tree on Whitley Avenue in Corcoran. The tree is brought down from the Sequoia Mountains after being carefully chosen by the Christmas Tree Committee. Hours of planning and hard work by the committee volunteers who make the annual trek to harvest the tree is the due to the commitment from the committee which is currently holding meetings for anyone wishing to be a part of this great tradition.
Local residents who wish to volunteer on the Corcoran Christmas Tree Committee are welcome. The committee has released a tentative schedule for this year’s tree harvest and activities which is as follows:
–November 16 – Tree Harvest.
–November 23 – Tree Installation and Park Decoration.
–November 30 – Any follow up work for the tree and park.
–December 2 – Candy Bagging.
