John Muir students are into science in a big way and it certainly showed during the middle school’s recent science fair. The competition was tough, but best of show awards for both individual and group projects earned trips to the Tulare County Science Fair.

Taking those top awards were Sonia Gomez in the individual project arena; and the group of Melanie Pelayo and Erica Jones.

The science fair was the culmination of two months of work by students and their teachers. The instructors followed the guidelines established by the Tulare County program. Each science class in sixth, seventh and eighth grade competed, with teachers judging winners in each block. Those initial winners were sent to Judy Fiero, John Muir literacy coach, to be judged for overall first, second and third places by grade level. Best of show selections were also made at that time.

All students got to show off their efforts at the following science fair, which was held in the John Muir gymnasium earlier this month. The fair had something for everyone, since students were able to choose a project that coincided with their favorite approach to science, including life science, earth and space science, physical science, chemistry, physics, engineering and mathematics, or behavioral and social science.

Individual and group winners included:

–Sixth grade individuals: first Dallas Echavarria; second, Nathaniel Chavez; third, Gabrielle Salgado. Group: first, Maria Casteneda and Alixadria Zepeda; second, Jasmine Havens and Damien Zepeda; third, Daniel Gonzales, Aiden Valdez and Anthony Alvarez.
