To celebrate and encourage literacy in the homes of Corcoran preschoolers, the Corcoran Kiwanis Club made a donation of a new Dr. Seuss books for each student attending Bret Harte Preschool and EduCare’s Corcoran Learning Center Preschool program. The club was approached by Marisela Contreras, the Bret Harte Preschool site supervisor, for a possible donation of the hardback books. As part of the “Read Across America” event on March 2, each student would receive a new, hardcover book appropriate for beginning readers. The club overwhelmingly supported the approval of the donation and the books were purchased and delivered last week. Kiwanis wanted to extend the offer to also purchase books for EduCare’s Corcoran Learning Center students; preschool Corcoran children being serviced through Fresno County and housed at the Bret Harte school site. Their site supervisor, Alejandra Alfaro, formally made the request and the donation was approved and their books were delivered Tuesday. Kiwanis Club president, Laura Duran made the deliveries. Laura is also the Safety Security Coordinator for the Corcoran Unified School District. The Kiwanis Club of Corcoran is looking forward to sponsoring and hosting Literacy Nights again, as soon as it becomes safe. Club members said they miss seeing the children and parents in person but for now the book donation will hopefully put a smile on the children’s faces.
