Matson, Lopez are CHS Athletes of the Year

Corcoran High School held their annual Athlete of the Year banquet last Thursday evening in the Technology Learning Center (TLC).

Taking the overall Male and Female Athletes of the Year awards were Jonathan Matson and Jullisa Lopez.
Matson, a senior, is a four year cross country runner. He was the team’s Most Valuable Player and he placed second at Valley and was a state qualifier every year of his high school career. His 5K time is a 15.19.
In the winter, Jonathan was a member of the varsity soccer team where he played as a forward and earned the Most Improved Award as well as the Scholar Athlete Award.
In the spring, Matson was on the track team. He earned a four-year medal in track and was the East Sequoia League champion in the 3200m, 1600m, and 800m. He helped his team capture an ESL co-championship and he also qualified for the Masters Meet.
Matson has a 4.14 Grade point average and has signed a letter of intent to Fresno Pacific College.
Lopez is also a senior at Corcoran High. She is a three-sport athlete who earned her four-year medal in volleyball. Jullisa averaged nine blocks, five kills, three assists and two aces per game. She was named the team’s Golden Panther and she earned first team all-league honors.
Lopez played sweeper and stopper for the soccer team for three years and was the team’s Golden Panther.
As a member of the track team, she competed in several events including as a sprinter and a jumper. At the Corcoran Invitational track meet she placed second in the triple jump and as a member of the 4×4 relay team. She took third in the high jump and second in the triple jump at the East Sequoia League championships. Her team finished fourth in league.
Jullisa will be attending College of the Sequoias in the fall and pursuing a career in Animal Science.
