The RAC after school program and Waste Management teamed up at John C. Fremont Elementary School to challenge students through an environmental protection awareness program.
Among the topics explored in the Earth Savers: The World is in Our Hands curriculum were water conservation, recycling and proper disposal of waste.
The after school program hosted a culminating event to showcase the projects created by second and third grade students. For one of the activities, students had several days to collect recyclable materials and work on transforming the materials into art pieces.
“We encourage students to learn about the importance of protecting the environment,” said Cecilio Barrera, community relations manager for Waste Management. “The students did not only challenge themselves to deliver amazing projects, but also learned an important lesson about recycling.”
The environmental protection awareness curriculum encouraged students to work in teams, closely with their teachers, and put their investigative skills to work while they researched ideas for the creative projects.
“The students learned an important lesson about recycling and protecting the environment and at the same time had fun working on their projects,” noted Veronica Cruz, program director of the RAC after school program.
