The Corcoran Police Department has announced that Sergeant Alex Chavarria graduated from the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute (SBSLI) on Friday, September. 15, in Valencia.
The Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute (SBSLI) is a program designed by the Commission on Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) to stimulate personal growth, leadership, and ethical decision-making in California law enforcement front-line supervisors. Designed and implemented in 1988 through the efforts of California law enforcement professionals and top educators and trainers, the SBSLI is an intense eight month program based on experiential learning techniques. Students are challenged to learn new ways to resolve issues through group and individual work. The curriculum takes students through an analysis of management (planning, organizing, directing, etc.) and leadership (inspiring, challenging, developing) and how each discipline compliments the other. The course progresses from self-evaluation, to interpersonal evaluation, to organizational relationships. Class 399 graduated 23 students from law enforcement agencies across California including Corona PD, Petaluma PD, LA County Sheriff, Santa Monica PD, San Diego Harbor PD, LA Port PD, San Diego DA’s Office, Anaheim PD, Palo Alto PD, Oceanside PD, Signal Hill PD, San Diego Sheriff, San Diego Unified School District PD, Glendale PD, Orange County Sheriff, Monterey County Sheriff, LAPD, California Highway Patrol, Riverside County Sheriff and Riverside PD. Sergeant Chavarria began his career with Corcoran Police Department in October 1992, and has served in a variety of assignments including patrol officer, field training officer, narcotics investigator and detective. He was promoted to corporal in April 2002 and to sergeant in September of 2014. During Sgt. Chavarria’s time with the Corcoran Police Department he has completed over 1,600 hours of P.O.S.T. certified advanced officer training. Police Chief Reuben Shortnacy said Sgt. Chavarria’s vast experience, training, dedication and loyalty contribute to him being a valuable member of the Corcoran Police Department’s leadership team. “I hope the community will join me in congratulating Sergeant Alex Chavarria for his accomplishment and desire to continue his education and leadership development in service to our staff and our community,” stated Chief Shortnacy.
