A Corcoran man got a rude awakening after midnight Thursday. Alex Barrera Sr., 38, told local police he was sleeping when he was confronted by his son, 18-year-old Alex Barrera Jr.

When he called the police at approximately 12:40 a.m., he said he and his son began arguing, before the son stabbed him in the neck and hand. He told officers he was able to grab a handgun and shoot his son in the chest before the son fled the scene.

Alex Sr. told police he did not know how his son got into his home in the 1600 block of Wigdal Ave.

Alex Sr. was transported by helicopter to Fresno Regional Medical Center, where he was treated and released. Alex Jr. was later located on a traffic stop by local officers in the county fringe. He was found to have suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

After his release from the hospital, Alex Jr. was arrested on charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and burglary. He was to be remanded to the Kings County Jail in Hanford.

The case is ongoing and anyone with any information is encouraged to contact the Corcoran Police Department at 992-5151.
