Supervisors approve microenterprise business assistance

Kings County Board of Supervisors finalized a program to roll out $500,000 in micro enterprise business assistance. This funding is intended to provide support through grants for qualifying microenterprise businesses in an amount up to $25,000.

The funding is being allocated under the Community Development Block Grant-Coronavirus Aid allowance for microenterprise businesses that have faced widespread challenges due to the pandemic, including periods of shut down, declines in revenue, or increased costs.

Eligible businesses include for-profit micro enterprise businesses which are in the unincorporated areas of Kings County; with five or fewer employees; maintain a household income at or below 80% of the Area Median Income; and who were in operation in Kings County prior to March 15, 2020. Applicants will be required to produce tax returns to demonstrate reductions in at least 10% revenue over the past two years. Applicants may use funding for the following purposes:

–payroll;

–insurance;

–lease or mortgage payments;

–utility payments;

–inventory and supplies;

–marketing;

–accounting;

–supplies;

–furniture, fixtures and equipment; and

–capital improvements.

Business who are not eligible are those:

–with over five employees;

–nonprofits;

–businesses with active code enforcement violations;

–businesses who have field bankruptcy in the last three years or have outstanding tax liens;

–businesses in the cannabis industry.

Grants will be awarded on a first come first serve basis.

To date the Kings County Board of Supervisors have allocated more than $12 million in direct support, assisting more than 400 local small businesses.

In partnership with the Kings County Community Development Agency, the Kings County Job Training office and Kings County Economic Development Corporation are administering the program countywide in collaboration with multiple other organizations that are assisting in the effort.
