Aaliyah Thompson of Corcoran has added another honor to her growing list. Aaliyah has been named to the Div. V First Team All-State by Cal-Hi Sports.
Aaliyah is the daughter of Catrina and Bruce Thompson of Corcoran. The 6’ 1” sophomore helped lead the CHS Lady Panthers to a third place finish in East Sequoia League play. Corcoran posted an 8-4 record behind Thompson who averaged 11.4 rebounds and 22.3 points per game. She has also scored over 1,000 career points.
Not only did Thompson receive recognition from Cal-Hi Sports as an all-stater but she was also named to the Pag Meter Fab 40 Central Section All-Stars as well as to the All-League First Team for the East Sequoia League.
Aaliyah’s coach Carlos Garza says she’s a special student athlete.
“Aaliyah is a young student athlete who is just in her second year of high school and has completed her second year of girls’ varsity basketball. Aaliyah is still learning and developing to be a strong low/inside post player. She didn’t start wanting to be a post player last year as a Freshman, but she has become an impressive go to player as she continues to gain confidence in her inside ability,” Coach Garza said. “As she continues to work on her body and foot work, she will become a very dominating force and all-around player. People have taken note of her stats, which have been very impressive indeed. But stats aren’t everything. She will now also be looked at for the all-around type of player that she is.”
Coach Garza also added that Aaliyah being named first team all-stat by Cal-Hi sports for Div. V comes as no surprise.
“Aaliyah has been so smooth and quiet during our games, that it isn’t until I’m inputting our after game team stats into Max Prep and Scorebook Live, that I note her results. She just about doubled her stats this year compared to last year,” Coach Garza commented. “She finished this season with 713 points (411 pts. last year), 365 rebounds (124 last year), 19 Assist (17 last year), 93 steals (44 last year), 105 Blocks (38 last year), 122/217 Free Throws (52%) (81/156, 52% last year). There were some games where she did not play to her potential, but she still has a lot of untapped potential in her that excites me to hopefully see her unleash!”
When Aaliyah is not on the basketball court you can find her playing volleyball in the fall and participating in track during the spring. However, during the summer she’s back playing the game she loves as a member of the Lady Sparks travel basketball team for Corcoran.
