The Corcoran High School Cross Country swept the East Sequoia League Championships last week.
The day started with some great running from the Frosh Soph Boys. Carlos Rojas led the FS team with a second place finish with a time of 18:06. Carlos earned himself a spot on the Varsity Boys’ team for the Valley Championship as a second alternate. Joe Romero saved his best race for last, running an 18:36 good enough for second on the team. Joe’s performance earned him Frosh-Soph Runner of the Week.
Other runners included Eliseo Mendez (18:59), Daniel Chavez (19:28), Leo Villasenor (19:42) and Ivan Flores (21:07).
Luis Rojas led the Junior Varsity Boys with a time of 17:49.
“I was very impressed with how he ran today. Luis had been recently demoted to JV and responded with this type of effort. There are two ways to respond to a demotion, either give up or step up Luis chose the latter,” said Coach Isaias Ramirez. “The closest opponent was 46 seconds away which was one of his teammates”.
Other JV runners included Everardo Ramirez (18:35), Rudolph Barrera (19:15), Francisco Villasenor (19:30), Alberto Martinez (19:50) and Jagraaj Dulai. The JV boys were two points away from a perfect score, added Ramirez.
Running a full team for the first time in a month was the Girls’ Varsity team. Dulce Beas clocked in at 20:20 and earned the Individual League Championship. She was able to hold off teammate Roxana Lule who had a time of 20:24 for the win. Victoria Cota recorded a time of 22:19, Kayla Gutierrez had a time of 23:48, Jennifer Gonzalez clocked in at 24:36, Angelica Salgado ran a time of 24:58, and Samantha Matson clocked in at 25:48.
“It was closer than we anticipated. I have to give credit to the Lindsay girls they ran really tough. I think it was a little wake up call for us. I’m pretty confident the team will respond well for next week,” commented Ramirez.
The Varsity Boys concluded the day with a near perfect score. Jonathan Matson ran one of the fastest races of the year with a time of 15:19. Rounding out the meet were Pedro Perez (15:59), Cesar Angulo (16:19), Carl Inac (16:30), Arnoldo Villanueva (16:36), Christian Gonzalez (16:36) and Aldo Garcia (17:12).
“I’m really proud of the team. We have worked so hard since the summer and it paid off. We were Undefeated League Champions at all levels. Now it’s time to switch our focus to our team goal which is going to State,” Coach Ramirez said.
Runners of the Week were Joe Romero, Dulce Beas, Jonathan Matson. The team will compete in the Valley championship meet which will be held today (Thursday) in Fresno.
